Supongo que, cuando tenemos miedo, afirmarnos escépticos en materia de sentimientos contribuye a crear alrededor nuestro una especie de muro tras el que nos sentimos a salvo.
No obstante, no estoy segura de haber conocido nunca a nadie que de verdad albergara serias dudas respecto a temas de las emociones complejas. ¿Es vuestro caso, o de verdad os habéis encontrado con personas que creían en serio en que el amor no es más que una ilusión de los sentidos, etc.; una trampa de la Naturaleza, etc.; un invento post-revolución industrial de una burguesía aburrida, etcétera...?

Ser cínico es como ser altruista o ser simpático: una aspiración más que un estado permanente. La diferencia es que los que queremos ser cínicos no tenemos que justificarnos cuando no lo somos (la incoherencia va en el lote, es vituperable).
Sobre el amor y las emociones complejas:
amor. (Del lat. amor, -ōris).
1. m. Sentimiento intenso del ser humano que, partiendo de su propia insuficiencia, necesita y busca el encuentro y unión con otro ser.
A la vista de esta acepción va a resultar que los señores de la RAE son unos cínicos. ¿Amor e insuficiencia en la misma frase? ¿Cuando sientes amor es porque justo antes has sentido insuficiencia? ¿El sentimiento "amor" oculta al sentimiento "insuficiencia"? Entonces... ¿no es una trampa de los sentidos?
2. m. Sentimiento hacia otra persona que naturalmente nos atrae y que, procurando reciprocidad en el deseo de unión, nos completa, alegra y da energía para convivir, comunicarnos y crear.
Más cinismo, si no directamente descaro en el ánimo de engañar. Si somos seres incompletos, ¿puede completarnos otra persona? Si acaso, puede ponernos un parche, pero seguiremos siendo seres incomletos. Con un parche, pero incompletos, defectuosos. Por lo tanto, esta definición esconde una mentira. Eso sí, mientras nos la creamos, nos alegraremos y tendremos más energía. El amor es como la cocaína o el éxtasis, pero más barato.
3. m. Sentimiento de afecto, inclinación y entrega a alguien o algo.
¡Por fin una definición sin dobleces! ¿Se estará riendo de nosotros el señor de la RAE al ponerla en tercer lugar? Palabra clave: "entrega". Matiz fundamental: "o algo". Entonces, el amor no es algo que hagamos o sintamos para nosotros ni para otros, sino PARA TODO. Sería una especie de generosidad desinteresada universal, cosa que es imposible de poner en práctica a menos que seas Jesucristo o Gandhi. Como no hay ni Jesucristos ni Gandhis más que en las historias y leyendas, no hay amor en la realidad. El amor, pues, a nivel práctico, no existe más que como un punto de referencia. Si eres un ser humano normal, puedes intentar sentir y practicar el amor, pero no puedes conseguirlo. No le quieres: quieres quererle, pero hasta que no quieras a Bush, a Hitler, a NanySex a la pelusa de debajo de la cama, a la cucaracha del fregadero y a del Nido, no podrás quererle.
4. m. Tendencia a la unión sexual.
Otra manera de decir "trampa de la naturaleza".
El resto de definiciones de la RAE se refieren a aspectos menores o colaterales del amor, así que no las incluyo en mi refutación cínica.
